Julien van Mallaerts and Timothy Dean English Song Recital 29th May 2022

Julien van Mallaerts and Tim Dean gave a highly entertaining and beautifully crafted song recital at the Chapel Street Methodist Chapel series in Penzance on 29th May 2022.

An enthusiastic audience gathered to hear a programme of English song including well known settings by Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams on Sunday afternoon as part of the Piano Go Round series of concerts.

So much of the enjoyment in a song recital is to be had from the presence and drive of the performers and right from the opening thrills and whistles of Britten's Plough Boy and Oliver Cromwell contrasted with Sally Gardens, the audience was riveted with a presentation that was always entertaining..

This is a rich voice but also very subtle with wonderful diction and superb pianissimo, bringing to the performance of well known folk song repertoire a freshness which sparked interest which kept us on the edge of our chairs wanting more of the superb top range...but never overblown.

Julien had just been back in Cornwall to record the Secular Cantata by Russell Pascoe (premiered in Truro Cathedral) and we are so pleased that he chose such a fun programme to present in Cornwall on his lightning visit.

Brodsky Quartet at opening concert of Music on the Moor 9th July 2025

A full house at the opening concert  of a new festival on Bodmin Moor - this event hosted at Lavethan House by Blisland Village.   The programme was entitled "Inner Music" because one senses the works chosen invite consideration of biography and reflection.  The Brodsky's gave a subtle performance of Haydn's Quartet in C op 54 no 2 followed by the Bedrich Smetana "From my Life" quartet  no 1 in E minor which is full of middel-European panache, chutzpah and character and variety but also tragedy.   With Krysia Osostowicz's introduction outlining the shape of Smetana's own biography: early fame, joy in dancing and living in a hugely admiring public life and then debilitating tinnitus followed by confinement and seclusion for his mental health.  The work full of joy and fun and dance portrays a diverting character but strident tones brings all to a profound silence and abrupt cut off.   The final work was the late Beethoven quartet i...

Yulia Chaplina concert tour of Cornwall June 2025

Schubert Impromptus Yulia Chaplina’s four concert tour across Cornwall gave us some really wonderful insights into many piano masterpieces. Her approach was deeply characterful but also selfless… “an absence of ego and a phenomenal range of colour and contrast in piano sound ” as violinist Jackie Shave described it after her final concert in Penzance. Or leader of the Brodsky Quartet Krysia Osostowicz  who said after the concert in Lavethan The Russian repertoire she presented in her second halves included the light hearted Shostakovich of the film and ballet composer- an aspect of the composer not so familiar to those of us more used to his symphonies, quartets and opera. The darker side of the Soviet creative world was touched on in the music of Weinberg (a younger less celebrated colleague of Shostakovich) with music from the Children’s Notebooks - though as Yulia pointed out in her personal introductions these pieces were not really children’s music! Arrangements of Rachmaninov...
